Police arrest 22 for DUI

During the week of Nov. 2-8, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

During the week of Nov. 2-8, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; Puna, 5; South Hilo, 4; and South Kohala, 2.

So far this year, there have been 922 DUI arrests compared to 996 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.4 percent.

There have been 1,298 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,350 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been 17 official traffic fatalities compared to 11 for all of 2014, an increase of 54.5 percent.

To date, 11 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — six to drugs and five to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
